Basic Stories of the Bible

Basic Stories: We developed a list of seventy key stories for children, youth, and adults in our community to know.  Reducing a great and varied collection of stories such as the Bible to such a few stories required discernment and meant many great and important stories didn’t make our “favs” list.  We hope people will explore well beyond the base or core of seventy stories.  The seventy stories we picked fit some or all of the following criteria:

  • The story helps tell the basic arc of the Old Testament or New Testament.

  • The story forms part of our ‘cultural canon’ of stories referenced beyond the church.

  • The story exists in conversation with other stories in scripture, such as the way Mary’s Song echoes Hannah’s Song.

  • The story develops an inclusive and expansive understanding of God’s people by telling of the experience of women, outsiders, or moments when ‘heroes’ act in ‘unheroic’ or equivocal ways, including arrest and imprisonment.

  • The story focuses on a key developmental themes such as call, rivalry, and reconciliation.
